CHAPTER 6

Israel: America’s Burdensome Stone

Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it. – Zechariah 12:2-3

Historians have sometimes pointed out the common threads that so closely link the United States and Great Britain. But few have pointed out the even more astonishing similarities between America and ancient Israel. For some time now, I have written about these unique parallels in books such as Plucking the Eagle’s Wings and Unusual Prophecies: America’s Cycles and Patterns. Both of these works highlight in detail this fascinating spiritual connection, something that has intrigued me for years. How anyone familiar with American history could overlook the spiritual connection to Israel that so many of the founding fathers saw is beyond me. In fact, the most prominent features in this Israel-America link are to be found in the very early history of America.

For instance, the Puritans were very religious pioneers who considered themselves to be spiritually akin to the ancient Israelites, even calling themselves “fellow Jewish travelers.” They considered their departure from Britain to start a new life in the New World to be similar to Israel’s exodus from Egyptian bondage. (Later, the image of Israel leaving Egypt would be considered for the federal seal of the United States.) It was descendants of these Puritans who, a century and a half later, fired the “shot heard around the world.” That shot led to the establishment of a new nation, initially comprised of thirteen states. That is interesting because Joseph, the son of Jacob, was given a double portion through Manasseh and Ephraim, so Israel actually had thirteen tribes.

Those thirteen tribes were considered to be one nation because of the Law given them at Mount Sinai. In fact, God instructed them that there was to be one law “both for him that is born among the children of Israel, and for the stranger that sojourneth among them” (Numbers 15:29). Going all the way back to the Pilgrims and the Mayflower Compact, the founders of America understood that the nation should have one law for all people, and that law was based on the laws that Moses wrote down in the Torah. One Puritan founder, John Endicott, wanted to make the Law of Moses the official law of Massachusetts.

Besides laws, the one thing that tends to bring people together as a nation is the language. Though everyone knows that most of the earliest settlers spoke English, few people realize that many of the early colonists, such as Plymouth Plantation governor William Bradford and Puritan minister Cotton Mather, were fluent in the Hebrew language. Many of the early universities taught Hebrew as a required class, and some of their school insignias contained Hebrew text or Old Testament symbolism.
